Every new year ushers in new trends in a variety of areas, including fashion, politics, the economy, technology, and many more. By inviting University of Kentucky professors to forecast and debate impending trends in their fields, UKNow is looking ahead to 2023.

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environment’s associate professor and director of graduate studies, Scarlett Wesley, Ph.D., discusses her predictions for the upcoming year’s fashion trends.

Here are some pointers that include his predictions.

Things that influence fashion every year.

Welsey asserts that social media currently has the greatest impact on prevailing fashion trends. Someone on social media can literally overnight amass a sizable following, and marketers are utilizing this fact by collaborating with these influencers to reach consumers.

However, when inflation rises, we will observe a little decline in expenditure. This will increase the appeal of used apparel and motivate consumers to redesign their wardrobes.

Fashions that are going to stay in 2023 and those which are dying out.

Wesley: For at least the upcoming year, wide-leg pants and oversized apparel will be in style. Additionally, the idea of warm attire, as we continue to spend more time indoors and less time outdoors.

The tighter clothing trends are disappearing. More than ever, people want to feel at ease. The color palette will remain more subdued, with tranquil tones predominating in all facets of fashion.

The trends which are continuing from previous years.

Welsey claims that recent trends include attire from the 1990s and the early 2000s, such as the popularity of flannel shirts, low rise jeans, and tiny skirts, as well as fitted items like vests.

The era that had the biggest impact on fashion in 2022.

The 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, says Wesley. To appeal to today’s media-savvy consumer, elements from previous decades have been reinterpreted.
